The Hidden Political Tribes Dividing America

Research by Hidden Tribes: A Study of America’s Polarized Landscape (2018)

As you may know...Project Divided is an initiative working to break down political polarization through conversation. But we'll also be ~ breaking down ~ interesting research that we come across while doing this work. Together we'll tackle some of the research that explains why we think the way we do, interact the way we do, and communicate the way we do. And what's even better!? We'll summarize these studies into cool graphics like this one (slide over to the next picture!)

This graphic explains how the majority of Americans do not identify with ideology on the “wings”, but that in fact, 77% percent of Americans believe that our differences are not so great that we cannot come together to find common ground.

We’re all at different levels when it comes to being politically engaged. I know that I have some friends that are SUPER passionate about politics and are constantly engaging in political work, and I also have friends who are interested but simply don’t have the time to engage due to school or work, and then friends who may want to learn more but are simply overwhelmed. The point is, not all of us are at the ‘wings’, and it’s sometimes seems hard when the people on the sides are dominating the conversation. It is so important that we have people who are engaged and passionate about these issues, but it can also be overwhelming to those whose voices aren’t being heard.

If you’re interested, you can take the More in Common quiz here to see which political group you would fall in! https://hiddentribes.us/quiz
